‘Seventeen, this is five. Need your sitrep immediately. Over.’ ‘Five, seventeen here. Busy now. Will send it soonest. Over.’ ‘Roger that. Over.’ ‘Only let there be peace. Out.’ This was a typical radio exchange between an Israeli headquarters in the Sinai Desert and a Maoz officer on the Suez Canal under attack from Egyptian artillery during the War of Attrition. The radio sign-off became a catch phrase and radio calls to and from the outposts on the canal customarily ended with the words: ‘Yehi Shalom’ or ‘Only let there be peace.’ The hopes and aspirations in the aftermath of the Six Day War for a lasting settlement between the Arabs and the Israelis were extinguished in the massive weight of artillery fire on Israeli positions in the Sinai Desert that prompted the IDF into the construction of solid field fortifications along the Suez Canal and Bitter Lakes.
